Sharing Engine/Measurement requirements

Introduction

This page is to identify and isolate Transition Network's website and widget measurement requirements in order to help decide on the use of either:

  • Google Analytics (powerful and brilliant and cheap technically, but not desirable ethically)
  • Piwik (probably not so powerful or cheap technically, functionality as yet unknown, but desirable ethically).

As per TRAC ticket 382.

We are testing how much load the use of Piwik puts on the server (at 21/12/11) in order to asses the technical cost of running piwik, and need to identify the features we need.

Required features: TN website and campaigns

Track main TN website metrics

  • As per piwik does currently and GA
  • Content drilldowns very useful
  • .xls and .pdf reports for numeric and graphical output

Track TN campaigns' metrics

  • The current widgets aren't using the facility for google tracking (but the current module does enable this feature to be added during the creation of the view). We are testing campaigns with various badges for the training team using the google campaign builder url to track click throughs back to the TN.org training page whilst the training team explore their marketing practices. Note: Piwik also has a simple to use campaign url builder too that can be used on ad-hoc items too - see http://piwik.org/docs/tracking-campaigns/url-builder/ plus a wealth of info on campaigns too. No reason as to why module can't be modded for adding piwik too for the current webwidgets module for the normal web widgets we're currently using.
  • TN hosted badges - only being used currently on test of training badges, but if worthwhile will be adding to all new badges on the site for use by transitioners.
  • TN hosted widgets - not being implemented currently but can add.

Required features: PSE widget

Track PSE individual widgets on a widget by widget basis

Widgets are generated dynamically as webmasters set them up. They need to be tracked and generate reports

Report on indvidual widgets' metrics

  • Views of widget in situ
  • Uses of widget in situ
  • Metrics for project items viewed through widget

Report on management: project submissions and moderators

  • Number of project submissions made through widget
  • Types of project submissions made through widget
  • Number of pending/approved/rejected project submissions
